Valery Contreras is currently working towards her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work at SDSU. She hopes to become a social worker in the near future to help and inspire many to find the resources they need to fulfill their goals. One thing she loves about PHI is getting the hands on involvement that comes along with volunteering in the San Diego and Ensenada communities
Melanie is a third year at San Diego State University majoring in kinesiology in emphasis of pre-physical therapy. She enjoys traveling, drinking lattes, watching Gossip Girl, and shopping. She joined Public Health Initiative to have a chance to change someone’s life and have a great time while doing so.
Tatyana is a first generation transfer student at San Diego State University. She is a Public Health major who is on the pre-physician assistant path. She aspires to be a physician assistant in the near future to provide health service to the medically underserved. Tatyana believes that PHI is a great way to get involved in San Diego and Baja California’s communities through volunteering and fundraising.
Sierra is a second year Biology Major on a pre-med track at San Diego State University with minors in Honors in Interdisciplinary Studies and Spanish. She enjoys watching romantic comedies, baking, and reading. Sierra joined PHI to be able to meet people with similar interests and give back to the local communities, as well as gain new experiences and help as many people as possible.
Maggie is a second year Public Health Major on a pre-med track at San Diego State University. In her free time, she enjoys playing her guitar and testing new cookie recipes. She joined PHI to find people with similar passions as her and to find ways to give back to the community.

Monica is a Public Health major here at SDSU. She hopes to go into a career in public health specializing in Community Health or Epidemiology. Monica joined PHI because of the great volunteer opportunities and to meet other people with the same interests. It’s also a great way to work with local communities as well as the underserved communities in Ensenada. She enjoys learning to cook new recipes and trying new food.

Alexa is a second year Biology major on a pre-med track at SDSU, minoring in Honors in Interdisciplinary Studies and Public Health. Alexa enjoys creating art, reading, baking, and crime shows. She joined PHI because of the numerous volunteering opportunities available to fundraise and benefit other communities. She wants to volunteer and help as many people as she can in her time.
Kristin Emory, Ph.D
Dr. Kristen Emory is the Director of the Undergraduate Program in the School of Public Health. Her favorite part of her job is traveling with and mentoring students, as well as advising the student organizations. In addition to her PhD in Public Health, she is a trained sociologist. She works in the field of health disparities; focusing primarily on global health, LGBTQ, Latinx and intersectionality issues. She love love loves to travel and is learning to play the accordion. Her catchphrase is: Love, Peace and Public Health!
